I'm so glad I've got BBC Radio 1 on my SiriusXM radio. It's so much better than our US stations, even if they do play Miley Cyrus. :(

But they play a lot of great indie, electronica, hip-hip, that wouldn't see the light of day here in the US.

I'm loving the band, Chapel Club. Nick Grimshaw played one of their songs on his show tonight. So good!

"Dear Comcast,
I'm curious about your newest ad campaign. If the people in this technicolor world are so excited about Comcast's service, why are they so monotone. Have they been zombified? Do I need to be under the care of a witchdoctor if I sign up for your service? I just curious because I'm worried that there may be subliminal messaging on Comcast if your subscribers act like this. Should I be worried?"

Jamie and I went and saw the Gutter Twins last night at The Doug Fir. Glad we bought tickets as it was a sold-out show. We had a great time and Jamie really liked what she heard. They did an acoustic set and it was awesome. One of the best moments was when Greg Dulli chewed out some women for talking during a really great song, "We Have Met Before." Here's a video of the song from a show on their European tour.

"I'm writing you, because I just saw your new Chicken McNuggets ad, Nuggnuts. How much market research did you do? The word is a little to close to the term, "Numb Nuts", which is what I first thought of the actors in the ad. Maybe I'm overthinking the ad, but I don't think so. So I went to California again this past weekend to visit Jamie. We were able to find a great ring in the LA diamond district, which if you have a way to get there that's where to go. Saved a ton of money and lots of interesting people to see.

I also had a few celebrity sightings in my travels as I tend to do when I go to California.

You know the economy is bad if Nas is flying Southwest. He was A-8, I was A-34 in the Southwest Airlines cattle call.

Also flying SW, he flew in on the plane that I took home from LA. He was nice and waited for his lady friend who was also on the plane.

Another observation:

You aren't going green if you don't use your turn signal. Got to be one of my biggest pet peeves. Just used it people.

Another turn signal line I used when I was living in Utah: "Use your turn signal, I'm not worthy to feel the Spirit".

People Really Do Look Better When You Drink

Booze may make everything look more attractive, not just members of the opposite sex.

For the first time, scientists have proven that "beer goggles" are real — other people really do look more attractive to us if we have been drinking.

Surprisingly, the beer goggles effect was not limited to just the opposite sex among the ostensibly straight volunteers recruited for the study — they also rated people from their own sex as more attractive.

Scientists in England gave 84 heterosexual college students chilled lime-flavored drinks that were either non-alcoholic or given a dose of vodka equivalent in alcohol to a large glass of wine or a pint-and-a-half of beer.

After 15 minutes, the volunteers were shown photos of 40 other college students from both sexes. Both men and women who drank booze found these faces more attractive, "a roughly 10 percent increase in ratings of attractiveness," said researcher Marcus Munafo, an experimental psychologist at the University of Bristol in England.

The researchers also asked volunteers to rate their mood, "and there were no differences on those measures in the alcohol group compared to the no-alcohol group," Munafo added. "This suggests that the effect we observed wasn't due to a general change in mood."

It did not escape Munafo that the results are rather obvious.

"Everyone knows about beer goggles," Munafo said. "But some of our results suggest that there's more going on than we might have thought."

The discovery that the effect is not specific to the opposite sex was surprising. One possibility is that alcohol generally makes us see things as more attractive, but when this occurs in social situations, such as at a bar, "this might become targeted at opposite-sex faces," Munafo said. By repeating the experiment with video clips shot at bars, the scientists hope to recreate those social cues and see what happens.

"The main question is whether these effects are specific to faces, or whether we would rate anything as more attractive after a drink," Munafo said.

Future research could expose people who have been drinking to landscapes or the faces of puppies and other animals, "to see if alcohol has a more general effect on perceiving beauty in the environment."

Low dose

"It's also surprising to see this effect is happening at lower doses than you might think," Munafo said. "We're trying to build up a more complete picture of what happens when people go out for a drink, and we're interested in certain behaviors that are more common after drinking, such as unsafe sex, or violence. If this effect is happening at lower doses than expected, it might be helpful for people who are predisposed to such behaviors to anticipate those situations and prevent them."

The scientists would also want to vary the levels of alcohol that volunteers receive, "but there are practical and ethical constraints around how much alcohol we can give people in the lab!" Munafo told LiveScience.

Munafo and his colleagues detailed their findings online August 6 in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholism.

The Huntington Botantical Gardens

After my time in Hollywood, I stayed in the LA area for the remainder of the weekend for some fun and relaxation. One of the things I did while I was there was visit the Huntington Botanical Gardens. The gardens are huge and the day was quite warm, but I'm so glad that I went. I really enjoyed the palm gardens, as it brought back memories of Brazil (seems like that's happening a lot lately). The desert gardens were my favorite, just the number of interesting plants and amazing colors was well worth the entrance fee ($20 for non-members). The Japanese Garden wasn't as good in my opinion as Portland's and the new opened Chinese Garden has promise, but it needs time to grow in. There were other exhibits, but by the end from the heat and walking, we were tired. But if I lived in the LA area, I'd get an annual membership for all the benefits you get, because once you've been there, you'll want to return, again and again.

So I've been back from Hollywood for a few days now and realized that I promised a report. I was there for meetings, but it was a fun trip. I got to stay at a nice hotel, The Renaissance Hollywood
, which was right off of the main drag. That was great and bad. Great because I did get to see a few celebs, bad because I came in late on the night of the Iron Man premiere and it took me a long, long time to get from LAX to the hotel. A pretty hefty cab bill.

I made it time for some dinner at Social Hollywood that the company had rented out for the evening. It was a really nice place and the food was great. I was pretty tired, but I had some roast beef and risotto that was excellent and a little dessert too. I loved the Kit Kat bars, basically truffles on a crunchy wafer foundation, similar to the great candy bar, but even better. And sorry Mitch, I wouldn't share them with anyone. Link

Thursday night we went to dinner at The Ivy. If have ever watched TMZ or read the National Enquirer then you've seen photos from The Ivy. The paparazzi are there all the time and they were in force then too. Not for anyone in particular but just in case someone was inside. There were a few people who looked like they might be a celeb, but the only confirmed celeb that we saw was Barry Williams aka Greg Brady.
Barry was there for dinner and we saw him during his trips to the bathroom. Not too impressive, but still who didn't love the Brady Bunch?

Other celebs I saw during my time there include: Michael Bivins of New Edition and Bell Biv Devoe after attending Sean "Diddy" Combs Walk of Fame Star presentation.

And also Ray J, R&B recording artist and brother of Brandy:

And he was with Suge Knight, cofounder of Death Row Records, and my personal favorite sighting.

I saw him and Ray J as I arrived at the hotel. I spotted Suge immediately as they were walking up near my cab. He gave me a big smile, and I said "What up, Suge." He smiled and nodded and we had our moment.

So I've been a little quiet since before the weekend. Simply put, I've been in bed for the most part and I wish it had been an enjoyable experience, well the bed and the bathroom. I came down with a nasty viral flu that beat me up pretty good this past weekend and I'm just now getting over. After all the throwing up and diarrhea, I haven't had much to eat over the past several days, just could keep anything down. And as a result I've lost 10 lbs. And not a fun way or healthy way to go about it.

But I still live to quote John Carter.

I'll be traveling quite a bit over the next week and a half for fun and work and plan on having some stories to tell and maybe even a celeb sighting or two. I'm dining at The Ivy in Hollywood, a week from tomorrow. And yes, I've been told I'm spoiled.

I saw this in the most recent issue of Sunset, one of favorite magazines since I was a kid. You can stay in a cabin at the Leaping Lamb Farm in Alsea. I haven't been yet, but it looks like a fun place for a weekend trip or family vacation.

The restaurants are from California, but still a fabulous idea and one that needs to be replicated in other cities, you listening Portland?

Tulip Festival

Here's some photos from the Tulip Fest at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm. It was great to see all the different flowers and the unique colors and shapes of the tulips. Word to the wise, if you can make it down during the week (the festival runs through April 27th), you'll save $5 on parking and also the headache of fighting the crowds just to get the parking lot. It took about a half an hour once we'd pulled on to the road to the farm just to get to the parking area. But it was still a good time and very interesting.

So I just got back in from the RJD2 concert. Happy Chichester and Dalek opened. I think I was one of the oldest people there, probably as this was an all ages show, but then not many people in my circle listen to what I do.

I didn't know anything about Happy. He is in RJ's live band and has an eclectic sound, folksy at times, but also taking advantage of live looping to create a soundscape on which to riff from. His Myspace page lists Sly and the Family Stone as his influence, which is evident. He's very entertaining to watch, as he really gets into his music and reminded me at time of Andy Serkis, Gollum of Lord of the Rings fame. Here's a couple of photos (sorry for the quality as they were taken from my cell phone):

Dalek was the second act. I recently did a short post on them here. I was impressed with their live show. They brought a lot of energy to the show. MC Dalek looked like he was going to get into a fight with the mic at any moment and Oktopus just bounced with the music with gusto. I enjoyed their set, but it seemed like they cut it short due to some audio issues.

Finally RJD2 came on. I was a little apprehensive with the "live band", but he started out with a strong DJ set, then the drummer came out and they did a song on the sampler and the drum set. Then the rest of the band came out and did some live versions of several of RJ's earlier work. They threw in a few old Nintendo classics as a band (Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong and Super Mario World) throughout the night to the enjoyment of all. They did about 3 or 4 songs off of his newest album ("The Third Hand"), but for the most part did many of the old favorites with the live band and the decks. It certainly won me over and I could see the progression in his music and how well it translated into this live format, which for a sample based artist can be a tough jump. So if you like old RJ, you'll like the new RJ and you should definately go see him live when he's in your town, if you haven't missed him already. Oh and I did get to shake the man's hand.

I had a good night at the store tonight because I just found that my market is carrying Crater Lake Soda! I really enjoy this brand especially their Lemon Lime Bitter.

No high fructose corn syrup, it's all 100% pure cane sugar and made here in the Pacific Northwest. :) And according to the website, it's also kosher and gluten-free.

The Ultimate Warrior

Hi, my name is Jeff and I like professional wrestling. Why is it that I feel I have to say it like I'm at an AA meeting.

But I still do have a lot of fond memories of the personalities of the past and those of the present when I get a chance to watch a match. So over the top and wonderful at the same time.

As a kid, I loved the Ultimate Warrior. Sure he was a freak, and maybe not the best wrestler, but so entertaining because he never really made sense.

I recently watched "The Self Destruction of The Ultimate Warrior" and it took me back. This wasn't the most flattering video of the Warrior, he's changed his name legally to Warrior. WWE obviously had an axe to grind with him, but it was still a good video and really funny. My favorite part was the interviews because he made no sense.

But at least he didn't smoke:

23 Hoyt

So I went to 23 Hoyt tonight with my restaurant group. We also celebrated, our friend, Sara's birthday.

The restaurant is modern and comfortable, you can see photos on their website. We were greeted promptly and warmly by the staff, who were able to seat us immediately for our reservation.

I tried a couple of their no proof drinks that they had available, a hibiscus-passion fruit-blood orange-mint refresher and a passion-fruit lemonade. I really enjoyed both, but my vote goes for the passion-fruit lemonade, which took me back to my time in Brazil.

I had the cauliflower soup to start. And what a start it was. Just an excellent pairing of the pureed cauliflower with the hot and sweet paprika, it was spicy, but not overpowering with the fontina cheese to help mellow the warming dish.

I then had the lamb shank with Corona bean gratin. I enjoyed this dish, it was something that I'd had on a rainy day to comfort me while the sun was away. It wasn't as impressive as the soup, it was lacking a little something for me, but very good nevertheless.

I finished my meal with the rhubarb-rose syrup cobbler and frozen yoghurt. It reminded me of the rhubarb I had as a kid, a memory of home and mother. All good and happy.

I enjoyed the meal and my experience at 23 Hoyt. I'd definitely come back for the food, ambiance and the wonderful service.

So I'm going to the RJD2 concert next week. I saw him last about 2 years ago in Salt Lake City. I'm not sure how it will be this time around as his performing with a live band. His new sound has taken me some time to embrace, but I do like it now, though still not as much as his earlier work.

That being said, I'm pretty excited to see Dalek, one of the acts that will be opening up the show. I'm a little late in coming to their music, as they have several albums out already, but I was really blown away by "Paragraphs Relentless" off their most recent offering "Abandoned Language" on the Ipecac label. Just deep grooves, beats and reminds me of Darc Mind, Public Enemy, newer Cage, and yet unique in it's own right.

Again, I'm looking forward to seeing them live along with RJD2 and Happy Chester.
